Nature's Kitchen: Exploring Health & Sustainability Through a Whole Food Plant Based Diet

By Tam K

Surging in popularity, whole food plant based diets have been on the rise in recent years, transforming from a niche dietary choice to a mainstream movement embraced by millions worldwide. This trend is driven by a growing awareness of the health benefits, environmental sustainability, and, of course, ethical considerations associated with a plant-based diet. In this article, we explore the key reasons behind this shift and offer practical advice for incorporating more plant-based foods into your diet.

Three Main Benefits of Plant-Based Eating

1. Your Health

First and foremost, let’s take a collective breath and just place the obvious facts on the table. Although it is widely known that plants are rich in essential nutrients, it is crucial to remember this fact. Passing by a tempting sweet shop may lead you to conveniently forget the fact that sugar is not part of a nutritious plant-based diet - even though it comes from the sugar cane plant. So, if getting healthier is your goal, just keep this in mind and do your best to learn about natural sweeteners as an alternative. I will talk more about this in our tips below.

Plant-based diets are rich in essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Research has shown that such diets can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. For instance, a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that a plant-based diet was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality (McKinsey & Company).

2. Environmental Impact

From an environmental standpoint, choosing plant-based foods can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. (Insert applause track here!) Yes, from this writer’s perspective – this is a very good thing. Not only does this type of lifestyle support one’s own health, but the world at large. Here’s why. The production of plant-based foods typically require fewer resources, such as water and land, and generates lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to animal-based foods. According to “Our World In Data .orgthe amount of land used for agriculture worldwide would be reduced by 75% if everyone switched to a plant-based diet. Because there would be less space needed for crop growth and less land utilized for grazing, there would be a significant reduction in the amount of agricultural land needed for land usage. 3. Ethical Considerations

Many people make the ethical decision to switch to a plant-based diet because they care about the welfare of animals. People can choose to be compassionate and support the humane treatment of animals by cutting back on or giving up the consumption of animal products (EverydayHealth.com / Global Citizen.org)

Tips for Transitioning to a Plant-Based Diet

1. Start Slow

Transitioning to a whole food plant-based diet doesn’t have to happen overnight. Begin by incorporating more plant-based meals into your weekly routine. Meatless Mondays, for example, can be a great way to start. Gradually increase the number of plant-based days as you become more comfortable.

2. Explore New Foods

Finding a wide range of new foods and flavors is one of the pleasures of eating a plant-based diet. Try a variety of legumes, grains, fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds. For variety and nutrition, try quinoa, lentils, chickpeas, greens, kale and avocados in your meals.

3. Learn to Cook Plant-Based Meals

Cooking at home allows you to control ingredients and explore plant-based recipes. There are numerous resources available, including cookbooks, blogs, and YouTube channels dedicated to plant-based cooking. Acquiring familiarity with a few basic recipes can facilitate and enhance the transition for an easier and more enjoyable meal.

4. Focus on Whole Foods

Aim to base your diet on whole, unprocessed foods. These are nutrient-dense and free from added sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial ingredients. Whole grains, fresh produce, nuts, and seeds should form the foundation of your diet.  And don’t worry if you have a sweet tooth. There are plenty of amazing, sweet treat recipes that are made with natural sugars like honey, dates, and maple syrup.  Here’s a couple of simple recipes to get you started – Mango Salsa or check out our Healthy Ice Cream recipe below:

5. Be Mindful of Nutrients

While a whole food plant based diet can be very healthy, it’s important to ensure you’re getting all essential nutrients. Pay attention to sources of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids. Consider supplements, if necessary, to ensure you are getting the nutrients that may not be included in your daily meals. (Two of my favorites are Pearl Powder and Dragons Blood made by Cultivate Elevate.) (For those of you wondering … Dragon’s Blood is from a “tree” and not a “dragon”.)

When I started my plant-based journey over 20 years ago, my first question was one you might be pondering as well . . .  “Where do I get my protein from?”  Well, I was happy to find that many vegetables actually have a high protein content like Spinach and Brussel Sprouts but, of course, there are so many other options like legumes, quinoa and more. If you simply do an online search, you can find them all.

6. Stay Informed and Inspired

Motivation is key when you are shifting over into something new. Participate in local or online plant-based communities to stay inspired. Pay attention to blogs, podcasts, and social media profiles that provide advice, recipes, and success stories. Interacting with people may encourage and support you as you embark on your plant-based path. And you get to taste your way along your new journey, so keep it fun and lighthearted.

Wrapping up

Embracing a plant-based diet offers numerous benefits for your health, the environment, and animal welfare. By making gradual changes and exploring new foods and recipes, you can enjoy the advantages of plant-based eating while contributing to a more sustainable and compassionate world. Whether you’re looking to improve your health, reduce your environmental impact, or make ethical food choices, a plant-based diet is a powerful way to achieve your goals.
